FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Chris Oates Qualifies for Ballot in 34th Middlesex State Rep Race
SOMERVILLE, MA — Chris Oates announced today that he has officially qualified for the ballot for State Representative in the 34th Middlesex District, representing parts of Somerville and Medford.
Oates gathered nearly every signature himself, spending weeks speaking directly with residents and knocking more than 1,000 doors in the process.
“This campaign is about urgency,” Oates said. “Too many people see Massachusetts becoming harder to afford while Beacon Hill moves slowly. I’m running to be a strong voice for our community and push for faster action on housing, transportation, energy, and childcare.”
Oates said Beacon Hill needs legislators willing to go deeper than talking points and focus relentlessly on solving problems. As a dad to a four-year old, Oates said he want to ensure that the state remains thriving for the next generation.
“Massachusetts has enormous strengths, but tackling our biggest challenges requires representatives who will put the district first, understand issues in depth, and show up every day to get things done,” Oates said. “People are looking for leaders to do the work, not just make promises to do so.”
Oates is the founder of a software platform that publishes legislative hearing transcripts to make government more accessible, and previously worked in political risk consulting for organizations like UNICEF, the European Parliament, and the World Bank. He was also a Senior Advisor on the 2020 Ranked Choice Voting ballot campaign and has taught at Boston University.
He has a PhD in International Relations from the University of Oxford and a BA in Political Science from Brown University.
